This animation goes over why swallowing problems (also known as dysphagia) are common after cervical spine surgery (ACDF) whether to pills, solids, liquids, or to everything. With this type of neck surgery, a metal plate is inserted over the cervical spine but just behind the swallowing tube. As such, this plate can alter the position of the back wall of the swallowing tube leading to dysphagia.
