This video begins a new series on Ray Tracing. In this first video in the series, we explain what ray tracing is and how it's different from rasterization. We also discuss hybrid rendering - which is the mix of rasterization and ray tracing that Unreal Engine uses. Finally we discuss how several ray traced effects work including ray traced shadows, ray traced reflections, ray traced ambient occlusion, and ray traced global illumination.
In the weeks that follow, we're going to show how to set up Unreal Engine for ray tracing, and then how to use each of these techniques to create realistic looking graphics.
