The Windham community is concerned after complaints of reckless and speeding drivers.
This comes after two serious crashes over the weekend.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, two people were injured in a two-car crash on Route 202 near Falmouth Road.
Firefighters had to cut through and remove the roof of the car to pull them out.
About 14 hours later on Sunday morning, a pickup truck hit a woman on Swett Road near Route 202.
Phyllis and Craig Anderson live on Swett Road and walked down to the crash after it happened.
“He said if she does survive, she will live a very different life,” Phyllis Anderson said.
“The speeds in town seem to have been increasing and we’re not seeing a whole lot of action,” Craig Anderson said.
They posted to Facebook Sunday and got more than 100 comments of similar concerns.
“We have several vehicles that we see on a regular basis almost at regular times going by at probably 70 miles per hour. This is a 25 mile per hour road,” Craig Anderson said.
CBS13 took those concerns to Windham Police Chief Kevin Schofield.
He says they’ve applied for federal grants to pay officers for extra patrols in problem areas.
“To enforce speeding, distracted driving, things like that,” Schofield said. “This month we are going to be putting out extra patrols on overtime.”
Some residents are also asking police to get stricter with penalties.
“They’re giving everyone a warning. Enough with the warnings, give somebody a ticket,” Phyllis Anderson said.
“Whether it’s through a warning, or messaging through a sign, or a ticket and a court hearing, our goal at the end of the day is to reach a level of voluntary compliance with traffic regulations and how to achieve that,” Schofield said.
The town has installed more stop signs and a traffic light at the Falmouth Road intersection with Route 202 in recent years.
They say these measures take years to implement, because they have to go through Maine DOT.
