In this video we capture 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley speeding through Doncaster in the night hauling the return leg of The Christmas White Rose operated by Saphos Trains! But before we see LMS Black Five No 44871 storming through Doncaster on platform 3 on The Christmas White Rose operated by The Railway Touring Company.
As said above, we start the video with 44871 storming through Doncaster on platform 3 as she makes her way from York to London Kings Cross via Lincoln Central & Peterborough where she would make way for diesel traction back to Kings Cross. The Black Five makes a nice start to an evening of seeing steam where she certainly passed through faster than we were expecting!
Fast forward around 40 mins later and the namesake of the video LNER A4 Pacific No 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley speeds passed making her way from York to St Albans City via Peterborough 'where she would alight the train' recreating the sights and sounds of the steam days in Doncaster, fantastic!
After a stop in Ranskill Loop we raced the train to Retford where unfortunately she was held up by a late running LNER York to London Kings Cross Azuma service.
The A4 crawls through on a yellow signal with the Azuma having just left not long beforehand with the signals changing to double yellow 60007 powers away from the station sounding nice to end an evening of seeing steam on the East Coast Mainline at Doncaster & Retford!
Overall a nice evening although it's certainly reminded me why I prefer to film at lineside locations or at smaller stations with both Doncaster & Retford being very busy. Some great performances from two superb locomotives with both being a real credit to mainline steam operations in 2024!
