Today I'm going to talk about my favourite ESL activity and game ideas for private tutoring or one-to-one tutoring or private tuition. There are a whole bunch of different names for it but basically if you're teaching just one student, here are some things that you can do with them.
So the first one is ESL news articles. Breaking News English will become your best friend if you do a lot of private tutoring for teenagers, university students, or adults. You can basically take articles from here and base an entire lesson around them: reading, listening, speaking, whatever your student wants to focus on.
Alright, number two is picture prompt ([ Ссылка ]). So bring in a picture and then students can talk about it. So very absolute beginners could just name words of things that they see. More advanced students could talk about maybe making predictions about what will happen next or maybe make up a little story based on what they see, etc.
Number three is to retell the story: one, two, three. This is an activity that works on speaking fluency. I get students to come up with a story, maybe like their best vacation or something like that or their favourite food. It can be actually kind of anything and they have to talk about it for 90 seconds. Then I give them another 60 seconds and they have to include all the same information but say it all again just in a shorter time so this means they have to speak more quickly. Finally, I'll do 30 seconds or 45 seconds for the third time and by this point, they should hopefully be speaking very quickly. Yes, it is the third time they're doing it and of course, the teacher can ask some follow-up questions related to this.
A nice way to start off a one-to-one session is to use this activity, just a minute ([ Ссылка ]). I come up with a different topic each day like hobbies, sports, movies, TV, and books. I don't know, anything you want and the challenge is this the student has to talk about that topic for one minute without stopping. The teacher can listen and then ask some follow-up questions and if you want the teacher can also repeat the challenge and then the student can listen and ask some follow-up questions as well.
The final one is presentations. So this can be actually super useful depending on where your students study or work or whatever. So maybe if they're preparing for like job interviews or they work in a company where they regularly have to make presentations or maybe they're a university student, it actually can be quite helpful to give them some assistance with making presentations in English. I love doing them about current events or just whatever students are interested in. Maybe they can make an infographic. Yeah, there are a ton of ideas so if that's something your student is interested in, then definitely explore that and I've had some great lessons getting students to do that.
