In Episode 2 of Unpacking Pakistan, we unpack the intertwined issues of urban sprawl, smog, and inequality in Pakistan's cities. We explore how unchecked urban expansion has resulted in pressing challenges for residents, from poor health outcomes and malnutrition to limited access to clean water and basic infrastructure.
Our conversation takes a critical look at the paradox of urbanization in Pakistan: while certain areas of the city witness flashy infrastructure projects like flyovers and bridges, vast swaths of the urban landscape remain neglected, plagued by crumbling roads and inadequate public services. Why do these disparities exist, and what are their long-term consequences for both the environment and social equality?
Simultaneously, we dive into the causes of smog, a growing environmental crisis in urban centers of Pakistan. This episode focusses on the government's role in addressing this crisis, highlighting where the current approach is falling short. Our guests debunk popular misconceptions about smog and take a look at at the science behind smog. As we unpack the issue, we suggest concrete steps for policy makers and citizens alike to mitigate its impact.
