The eponymous founder of Pythagoreanism, Pythagoras was an ancient Ionian Greek philosopher. His political and religious ideas were well recognised in Magna Graecia and had an impact on the thought of Plato, Aristotle, and ultimately the West as a whole. Despite the folklore that surrounds him, it appears that he was the son of Mnesarchus, a gem engraver on the island of Samos. Pythagoras travelled to Croton in southern Italy around 530 BC and created a school there where initiates were pledged to secret and lived a communal, ascetic existence. Modern researchers dispute about Pythagoras's education and inspirations, but they do believe that he did so.
