Dr. Tanmoy Mukherjee, Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility Specialist, and Co-Director of Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York (RMA of New York) in Manhattan, discusses performing preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) on donor eggs.
Patients pursuing egg donation may consider utilizing PGD to improve their chances of success. Even when using donor eggs in an IVF cycle (eggs are typically donated by a younger woman), 20-30% of the embryos created may be chromosomally abnormal.
PGD can be used to help overcome this barrier to pregnancy success. PGD involves biopsying Day 5 or Day 6 embryos in the IVF laboratory to evaluate their health at the chromosomal level, in order to select the healthiest embryo for transfer, with the ultimate goal of a healthy singleton pregnancy.
