Tonight the Dade County Sheriff and investigators tell us there is a strong possibility that the remains found in the woods today are those of Marie Creech- a Dade County bus driver who has been missing since June.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime scene unit and the Dade County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene on Burkhalter Gap Road near Lookout Mountain this afternoon, where they say a hiker reported seeing the human remains.
Dade County Sheriff Ray Cross say a skull was found near a wrecked vehicle that appears to have driven off the Scenic Highway cliff and into the woods.
Cross says, "It looks like someone drove it off the side of the mountain."
Cross says the vehicle appears to have been a gold Chrysler Van... which matches the description of the van Creech was last seen driving according to the Facebook page "Bring Marie Creech Home" Facebook page.
According to the Sheriff the car is registered under someone with the last name of Creech, but he does not know if it was the woman or her husband.
Cross says the van was on its side when investigators got to it, and after turning it over, they found the rest of the remains underneath.
Cross says, "The G.B.I. recovered the rest of the remains under the vehicle and they will be taken to the crime lab in Atlanta and we will be waiting on the results of the determination of whose remains it is."
According to the "Bring Marie Creech Home" Facebook page, Creech disappeared on the morning of June 4th, 2014. It says she left all of her belongings at home and took off in her Gold Chrysler Van- which had a full tank of gas. The page also says Creech suffered from depression.
Investigator Tim Mitchell has been handling this case. We attempted to reach him for a comment, but did not make contact with him.
We do not know at this time if her family has been contacted regarding the remains.
This is a developing story.
