New satellite images show China appears to be building launch sites for surface-to-air missiles on at least three atolls in the South China Sea.
The Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies released the images on Thursday that show the nearly completed missile sites.
A U.S. defense official says the facilities have retractable roofs making them capable of launching medium to long-range missiles.
The Chinese foreign ministry hasn't denied the existence of the missile sites, but claims Beijing has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands.
It added that it will uphold its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.
