Mindfulness meditation is trying to be fully aware of your thoughts, without trying to push them away, or hold onto them.

This teaches us to allow our experiences to come and go and change naturally.

We suffer because of attachment and aversion. We try to hoard pleasure and avoid pain at all costs, which is impossible.

So we suffer from reality not meeting our unrealistic expectations.

This happens with chronic pain as well. If you have chronic low back pain or sciatica you might feel like it's a good idea to only do things that feel good, while avoiding pain completely.

This intuitively makes sense but it's a terrible approach to chronic low back pain rehabilitation. Exercise is key! More important than that is to understand that not everything that hurts is causing harm to the body. It's okay to exercise with mild discomfort or pain.

You've got to practice mindfulness. Your beliefs influence your pain and disability more than you know.
