Is Irregular Bleeding Common When Starting A New Birth Control Pill? | Medicover Hospitals
In this video, Dr. R. Meenakshi, Consultant Gynecologist, and Obstetrician, Medicover Woman and Child Hospitals, explains irregular bleeding when taking oral contraceptive pills.
Understanding the exact reason for using the oral contraceptive pill is important. If the pill is taken to regularize the cycles, it may take a month or two to settle. However, if it was started primarily for contraception, it is a no-go if you had regular cycles previously. The key point about oral contraceptive pills is that they are more than 99.9% effective, but they must be taken regularly and at the same time every day. Your doctor will advise you to start the pill in the first week of your period and continue it on time every day for 21 days. After you stop, you should have normal periods, which may have a reduced flow but will be less painful than your previous periods. A point to note is that the current generation of pills are low-dose pills with few side effects and are very effective not only for contraception but also for various purposes.
