The term shamanism refers to a family of practitioners who voluntarily are able and do enter altered states of consciousness, and in those altered states, they experience themselves interacting with beings of one kind or another from whom they acquire either power or information or healing capacities. They do it all in order to be of service to their community. That's the final goal, that service to one's community which is the distinguishing feature of a true shaman as opposed to say the sorcerers you mentioned or the witch doctors who use whatever capacities they have for malevolent purposes. It's interesting that across the world's traditions, service is both a means to and the culmination of the path.
