Simulation of a stochastic cellular automata model for a growing neurosphere.
The rules of the CA model were adopted from this paper:

These rules were originally formulated in this paper:

The simulation is initialized by placing a single stem cell (red) in the center of the lattice. This stem cell can perform only asymmetric divisions. The progenitor cells (orange) generated through these divisions are endorsed with a maximum of six potential divisions. The first five divisions yield two progenitor daughter cells. The sixth division produces two differentiated cells (blue). Newly generated cells (except the cloned stem cell) are subject to the possibility of cell death. Dead cells are marked by black color. After a certain time the development of neurosphere stops. At this steady state, further division of stem and progenitor cells was blocked due to contact inhibition by differentiated cells in the periphery of the neurosphere.
A self-written Matlab script was used for computations and video creation.
