The Stoney Creek Mountain skyline changed dramatically Wednesday morning as the CHCH TV tower officially came down.
When the tower was initially built, it was the tallest structure in the country at more than 350 metres, or close to 1,200 feet.
“We started broadcasting from that tower in 1962 and it served us well for 62 years,” said CHCH’s manager of special projects, Wayne Rabishaw.
Rabishaw described the moment what was the sixth tower in Canada and 13th in the commonwealth come down.
“Surreal, it kind of was like slow motion coming down…we’ve been working on it since November. It’s nice that it’s down and that part of the process is over with.”
Burlington’s Grundy Telecom Integration Incorporated took down the Stoney Creek Mountain tower and built a new transmitter tower in Flamborough.
“Viewers won’t notice the tower is down, but people will notice the landmark is down and they’ve used it for a beacon for years.”
The new Flamborough tower stands around 1,000 feet tall.
