Extra Mural Lectures (Estd. in 1982) - Flagship lecture series, IIT Madras aiming to facilitate interaction between students and speakers from diverse fields. On 3rd October 2023, we featured the esteemed speaker Dr. Manu S Pillai, renowned historian and author who has written extensively on Indian history in a fireside chat on ' Religious Plurality in India: A history'.
Manu S. Pillai's discussion on religious plurality in India began by defining "plurality" in the Indian context as a profound interweaving of diverse faiths over centuries. Drawing from his own childhood, he shared anecdotes illustrating the richness of Indian plurality and the interplay between caste religion and society. Pillai explained how India's history, influenced by Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam, Christianity, and indigenous faiths, fostered a unique coexistence. He highlighted that India's pluralism emerged through dialogues, syncretism, and assimilation of beliefs, creating a dynamic and tolerant society. As a historian, Pillai stressed his role in not prescribing future lessons but in urging people to explore history, promoting a profound understanding of India's religious tapestry, mutual respect, and the preservation of this invaluable legacy for posterity.
