(19 Mar 2020) China defended its media regulations on Thursday after it had expelled several American journalists from the country.
In a news conference in Beijing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Geng Shuang said that the "relevant Chinese authorities deal with Chinese employees of foreign media in accordance with laws and regulations."
His comments were made after the Foreign Ministry said American citizens working for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post with credentials expiring before the end of the year must surrender their press cards within 10 days.
Geng also accused the US of being "hypocritical and deceptive" about press freedom and claimed that some Chinese journalists had been "in effect" expelled from the US in February after the introduction of a cap.
It is the latest in a series of tit-for-tat actions by the two governments as the Trump administration takes a more confrontational stance in dealing with China than his predecessors.
The countries remain enmeshed in a trade war despite a recent truce and have traded angry words over the coronavirus pandemic that first emerged in China and has spread worldwide.
