The splitting of Africa into two is a process called continental rifting, where tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface are pulling apart, creating a rift zone. This rift zone is gradually widening, causing Africa to split into two separate land masses over millions of years. The process is known as the East African Rift System. It's estimated to take tens of millions of years for this splitting to significantly affect the continent's geography. However, the process is incredibly slow, with the rift widening only a few millimeters per year.
