Merida during COVID-19 was on complete lockdown. We got there just in time. It opened up the day we arrived, and the people were so excited. Everyone was in the streets, strolling, carefully strolling, but strolling. The atmosphere was electric, and we absolutely loved beautiful Spanish colonial Merida. Merida was built on the ancient Mayan site of Tho (unfortunately totally destroyed), and has claim to the oldest cathedral in all of the Americas. The Paseo de Montejo is a beautiful strolling street similar to the Champs Elysees in Paris. Merida was one of our favorite stops in Mexico, and one of two cities we could see ourselves living in. The food is good. The people are so so nice, and the history is pretty amazing too. We loved just strolling around the city and admiring the Spanish architecture. It felt more like Spain or Europe in general than it did Mexico....at least the parts of Mexico we have visited so far. Merida is a great home base for your trip. It is the safest city in Mexico and has everything you need in close proximity to beaches, day trips to ruins, and colonial cities. We thing you will love it!
