In August 2013 the Catlin Seaview Survey team were in Mexico studying the huge Mesoamerican Reef system. The expedition period coincided with the migration season for whale sharks who come to areas like Isla Contoy to gorge on plankton blooms. On this particular day there were 50 whale sharks in the water.
Other mega-fauna including manta rays are also attracted to this area at this time of year. You will see a manta ray performing backflips in the left of screen in this video, this action allows them to scoop up plenty of plankton with minimal effort.
Footage was captured by a GoPro mounted on our SVII-S camera, it gives a divers perspective of this fantastic experience. Keep an eye out for a 'near miss' with a huge whale shark toward the end of the video.
