It is commonly rumored
that the song's namesake was Martha Ellis, a twelve-year-old girl whose grave the Allman Brothers Band most likely came across during their frequent trips to Rose Hill Cemetery in their homebase of Macon, Georgia. However, some in the know dispute this and say the song was written for Duane’s one time girlfriend Dixie Lee Meadows to whom Duanes sometimes referred. to as Little Martha as in Martha Washington. Either way , the song is a wonderful listen. It is kind of mind boggling that Duane Allman, Berry Oakley , Butch Trucks and eventually Greg Allman would be buried there too in 2017. The incredible backing track is courtesy of Andy of Shut up and Play.
