Barbara Finamore, senior strategic director for Asia at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), discusses her recent book "Will China Save the Planet?"
A leading China environmental expert, Finamore talks about the opportunities and challenges that China faces in leading a global clean-energy revolution in the absence of leadership from the United States. As the world's largest carbon emitter, China faces fundamental economic and political challenges in addressing its domestic environmental crisis that threaten to derail its low-carbon energy transition. Yet, China's leaders understand that transitioning from highly polluting heavy industry to one focused on clean energy, services and innovation is essential to the future of the planet and to China's own prosperity.
Finamore has nearly four decades of experience in environmental law and energy policy. In 2017, she was named a member of Foreign Policy's "The U.S.-China 50," a group of 50 individuals who are powering the world's most complex and consequential relationship.
