At least 766 migrants were rescued in the central Mediterranean by the Italian Coast Guard on Thursday. However, according to ANSA news agency, two shipwrecks off Libya left an estimated 239 migrants missing. Earlier on Thursday, Italian President Sergio Mattarella said the migrant crisis is one of the biggest humanitarian emergencies this century has seen, and the size of it may not be fully known yet. Italy has been bearing the brunt of a record surge in migrant crossings from North Africa.
