WEST LINDSEY PARISH #104: LISSINGTON
Here’s an interesting little village in West Lindsey – Lissington – a linear village 4 miles to the South of Market Rasen. A lot of people will know this place if they travel between Market Rasen and Wragby on a regular basis, because its on the B1202.
With that in mind, you can make the simple comparison here to Linwood, because not very many people ever stop here, they just use it as a thoroughfare. And being fair, you wouldn’t necessarily know where to look to find Lissington’s best bits. A lot of the village is set back from the road, behind massive trees which obscure the main landmarks. It’s central feature therefore is its pub – The White Hart – located right on a bend in the B1202.
Lissington was originally recorded in the Domesday Book as "Lessintone", and like Wickenby, was once part of the lands owned by the Danish farmer Wraggoe. In its time, its had two chapels, and a school, and still retains a church…if you know where to find it! The area the parish covers used to be bigger than what it currently is, but in 1887, Lissington gave up a few of its fields to Buslingthorpe.
It still covers a reasonable chunk of land and extends as far East as Bleasby Moor. That’s where you’ll find Top Farm, which attracts people from miles around. I would imagine many of you who know Lissington will have, at some point visited it.
