The Summit County Sheriff's Office says a suspect has turned himself in after an 84-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle in Northfield Center Township on Tuesday evening.
According to a release, sheriff's deputies were called to the 9200 block of Olde 8 Road at approximately 8 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle outside St. Barnabas Catholic School. The elderly victim from Boston Heights was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center by the Macedonia Fire Department, but later died from her injuries at the hospital.
According to officials, the woman was at St. Barnabas to watch her granddaughter take part in the school's Christmas concert.
"We ask for your prayers for the entire family during this profoundly difficult time," the Rev. James Kulway, St. Barnabas' pastor, said in a statement. "May the God of all goodness bring them comfort and peace in the face of such sorrow.
Multiple law enforcement agencies teamed up to help investigate the crash, and released a photo of a "late model, blue Ford Explorer" that was heading northbound on Olde 8 Road at the time of the incident. Officials add the Explorer "did not stop after striking the victim and subsequently fled the scene."
On Wednesday, the suspect was formally identified as 35-year-old Joseph Zolnowski of Parma. Authorities say Zolnowski surrendered himself and "is believed to be the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle." He was arrested on a third-degree felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash, with additional charges pending as the investigation continues.
