Verlan and Hyrum Lewis, authors of The Myth of Left and Right, explain where the mistaken idea of the left-right political spectrum came from. Like everything bad in the world, much of the blame can be laid at the feet of communism. Originating in Europe with the French Revolution, the terms left and right wing only emerged in America after the rise of the Soviet Union. In Russia, Bolsheviks and Mensheviks were described as right wing and left wing, and that concept was eventually imported into American politics where it lingers today despite having virtually no descriptive value.
