(16 Jan 2018) After speaking to priests and nuns gathered in Santiago's cathedral Pope Francis gathered with Chilean cardinals in a separate room on Tuesday.
He told them that "lay persons are not our peons, nor our employees. They do not need to repeat like parrots what we say to them."
Just moments earlier Francis dove head first into the sex abuse scandal that has devastated the Catholic Church's credibility in Chile, apologizing for the "irreparable damage" to victims, but also acknowledging the "pain" of priests who have been held collectively responsible for the crimes of a few.
Huge numbers of Chileans turned out to see the pope on his first full day in Chile, including an estimated 400,000 for his Mass.
