J. K. Mertz was a brilliant 19th-century guitarist and composer, known for his exceptional skills as both a guitarist and a composer. His compositions often present his virtuosity and ability to evoke a wide range of emotions.
One of Mertz's most beloved compositions is 'Vaterlands-Blüthen Originelle Ungarische Op. 1,' a collection of pieces that showcase his virtuosity and creativity on the guitar. If you listen carefully to these short pieces, as the title suggests, you can hear the distinctive musical character of the Hungarian verbunkos of the time. It is a temperamental, dancy and emotive bundle of little 'stories', which is particularly interesting when the pieces are played in succession rather than in isolation.
