Good quality learning is good quality learning, whether it is in person or online. What are the most effective ways to foster student engagement in online higher education? What are some common pitfalls for educators who are new to online teaching and learning?
These were key questions proposed by panelists during the first of four Virtual Conversations convened by the Collaboratory for Teacher Education at Penn GSE on April 13, 2020. These conversations are part of a series on Virtual Education, Well-Being, and Equity During the Current Health Crisis.
During the first conversation, moderated by Dr. Nicole Mittenfelner Carl, three teacher education experts shared insights and advice in response to the questions:
● What are the most effective ways to foster student engagement in online higher education?
● What are some common pitfalls for educators who are new to online teaching and learning, and what advice do you have for them?
The panelists included Dr. Betty Chandy, Director for Online Learning at Catalyst @ Penn GSE; Dr. Michael (Mike) Flynn, Director of Math Programs in the Professional and Graduate Education Division at Mount Holyoke College; and Dr. Megan Kelley-Petersen, Director of the U-ACT alternative route teacher preparation program at the University of Washington.
