SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings stymied the New Orleans Pelicans with a zone defense to capture a 123-108 win at Golden 1 Center on March 6.
After the game was tied 59-59 at halftime, Kings coach Mike Brown instituted a cover-defense, instead of the traditional man-to-man defense, to disrupt the Pelicans’ rhythmic offense.
The call for the alternative resistance by the Kings nearly worked to perfection.
“They threw some zone and we just allowed it to stagnate us offensively,” Pelicans head coach Willie Green. “We missed shots, turned the ball over a little bit too much. Tonight we allowed it to kind of mess (up) our rhythm up. We got to make shots when they go to the zone.”
Kevin Huerter led the Sacramento Kings (38-26, 20-13 at G1C) with 25 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and two steals. In the process, the University of Maryland product made 6 of 10 shots in 3-point territory.🎙
The Kings’ All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox sat out the home game with left hamstring soreness. Davion Mitchell started as floor leader for the Kings in Fox’s absence. Mitchell added 15 points and six assists.
“I think every time before the game when De’Aaron is not playing, Malik always comes up to me and says ‘you got to be extra aggressive’ because (Fox) is a load for us offensively and defensively. So, I just tried to go out there and be aggressive on both ends of the floor and I think that’s what I did today.”
Domantas Sabonis recorded his eight triple-double this season with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists in 34 minutes for the Kings. He is tied for the triple-doubles in a season in franchise history, in the company of Maurice Stokes (1957-58) and Oscar Robertson (1967-68).
“Talk about hall of famers Maurice Stokes and Oscar Robertson? That’s who you’re in the same breath with his eighth triple-double. So, that means something especially with Fox being out of the game,” Kings coach Mike Brown said of Sabonis’ accomplishment.
Brandon Ingram had 24 points, seven assists, and three rebounds for the Pelicans (31-34, 11-23 on the road), who have lost six of their last seven games. Jonas Valanciunas had 19 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and one blocked shots and Troy Murphy added 17 points.🎙
CJ McCollum scored 14 points and Herbert Jones dropped in 13 buckets for the Pelicans. The Pelicans were held to 49 points in the second half and allowed the Kings to outscore them 38-20 in the third quarter.🎙
“They messed up our rhythm. Made us a little stagnant and stopped our pace a little bit,” McCollum said. “But credit to them for mixing it up on defense, creating turnovers and getting out and running.”
The Kings play the New York Knicks on March 9 at G1C.
