Here I describe the reasoning why the Covid-19 vaccine is recommended even if you have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Building immunity to this virus in enough people is critical to ensure its eradication and to end this pandemic.
The formation of memory B and T cells forms the basis of vaccination, as it is these cells that hold information about the specific pathogen(s) that our bodies have been exposed to. B-cells are also capable of making antibodies which play a role in elimination of the pathogen(s).
During the eradication of smallpox, individuals beginning to show symptoms were given the smallpox vaccine, which significantly reduced their symptoms to the disease. This is currently being studied with Covid-19.
But, right now is is recommended to get the Covid-19 vaccine when you are feeling well, to insure your immune system isn’t fighting off any other pathogen(s). Current research shows that re-infection is uncommon within 90 days of initial infection.
I do use a few new technical terms, please find them defined below. As always, thank you for taking the time to learn a bit more about the vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 virus! 🦠
(technical terms: Natural Immunity = immune system response that occurs with a pathogen when the contact was not intentional. Viral Load = amount of virus your body came into contact with.)
