RAGBRAI DAY 4 AMES to DSM Record Breaking Heat and Rider Numbers | phil and the dash
Day 4 proved to be a great day coming into Des Moines from Ames. Although the heat was building during the day, many places had water spray going to help keep the riders cool.
This video has a lot of riding footage in it, so please enjoy that slice of RAGBRAI that is filled with the sounds of gear and rider chatter. I heard reported that one area between Ankeny and Des Moines was estimating 4000 riders going by every hour - officially or not - it gives the scope of the masses.
Day 4 also seemed to be the mass exodus day, as a lot of folks just bailed in Des Moines. Including yours truly.
With the heat indexes on the rise, paired up with the elevation gain coming out of Des Moines, we made the choice to call it.
I would shout out to the folks of Polk City - thank you for putting all those hydrants on to keep riders cool. The atmosphere downtown in the square was awesome. Crowded YES, but people were having a lot of fun. Thanks again Polk City.
I also noticed that many of the non official routes were being traveled between the Ames and DSM area. Although we stuck to the route, I feel that a lot of folks took some short cuts in effort to beat the heat.
Keep an eye out for our RAGBRAI WRAP UP VIDEO coming soon. Until then take care of your dash and we will see you on the next one.
