Anglicare Southern Queensland Children and Families Logan team held a naming ceremony for two meeting places at their offices, drawing from the Yugambeh language.
The names were chosen through a consultation process with Uncle Desmond Sandy a Yuggera, Yugambeh & Chelsea Elder to capture the spirit and purpose of these places using language.
Wungin is a Yugambeh word for ‘come’ and Yari means ‘speak.’ Together, these words capture the welcome of people to the area to share their stories with others.
Jakoba is a Yugambeh word which means ‘completely.’ This word was often used to close a meeting where all that could be said, had been said. Jakoba would signal to those who participated in the meeting that you now had all the information.
A special thank you to our Cultural Support Officer Noel Doyle and Service Manager Dean Keep for making this day a reality.
