The curse dates back to over 700 years ago when the Grimaldi family, who are the current royalty of Monaco, invaded the land. After violating a young girl and brutally murdering her, the girl, unable to rest in peace, transformed into a witch and cursed the Grimaldi family to never have a happy marriage. Subsequent generations of rulers indeed experienced unhappy marriages. For instance, in the 17th century, Prince Louis I's wife left him and became the mistress of the French King Louis XIV. Fast forward to the early 20th century, the reigning prince of Monaco was Louis II. He remained single for most of his life and did not have any legitimate offspring. It was only three years before his death that he thought of getting married and chose a French actress as his wife.
