Edge computing is a networking strategy where data is analyzed and processed at the periphery of the network, rather than on larger, more powerful servers in the cloud. The “periphery” is from the perspective of the internet service provider: it includes local servers along with end-user devices, such as laptops, smartphones, wearable devices, and embedded systems.
Edge computing offers the benefits of reduced network bandwidth and latency, improved energy efficiency, increased reliability, and enhanced data privacy. However, cloud computing is often necessary when scalability, processing power, and remote access are top priorities.
