Aseibu Amanfi, also known as “The Giant of Asebu”, was a legendary figure and the founder of the Asebu Kingdom in the Central Region of Ghana. According to oral tradition, he was a giant with an unusual physical appearance and possessed spiritual powers. It is believed that he and his brother, Farnyi Kwegya, fled from Egypt, crossed Lake Chad, and eventually settled in the coastal region of Southern Ghana.
Aseibu Amanfi is celebrated for his extraordinary strength, which is said to have been much stronger than the biblical Samson. His feats are still evident today in the Abura/Asebu/Kwamankese District of Ghana's Central Region, attracting tourists. For example, a rod he drove into the ground has remained immovable for over a millennium, and a heavy rock bears the imprint of his buttocks, demonstrating his giant and mysterious nature.
He is also remembered for his cultural legacies, such as the annual festival “Apayemkese” (passover), which is held in his memory. His staff, used for various conquests, still exists today and serves as a heritage object, and his fingerprints left on rocks in Asebu are considered sacred heritage sites.
In addition to his legendary status, there is also a musician named “Yaw Owusu”, known in the Highlife music industry as Aseibu Amanfi. He started his music career in 1976 and has made significant contributions to Highlife music in Ghana.
