Abha is the capital city of Aseer Province near the Red Sea in southwest Saudi Arabia. It’s known for the craggy mountains of Aseer National Park, which is home to birds, dense juniper forests, and the towering Jabal Soodah peak. At the heart of downtown Abha is the restored mud-walled Shada Castle, now a handicrafts museum. Nearby, the Al-Muftaha district has stone houses and a weekly market with crafts and curiosity.
Across an Ottoman bridge, the Al-Basta old quarter features traditional shops and a public square with Ottoman-era buildings. South of the city center, Green Mountain offers city views. To the west, Abha Lake Dam has walking trails and wildlife. Outside town the Rijal Alma Heritage Village is a maze of mud-brick houses and stone buildings, showcasing the local architecture. It’s home to ancient inscriptions and palaces including the centuries-old Alma Palace. Southeast of Abha, the ancient mud-brick village of Al-Habala is perched on a steep cliff, accessible by cable car.
