It’s hard to see a $100,000 price tag and think “good value,” but that is exactly what the 2018 Lexus LS 500 is. Starting nearly $15,000 less than a comparable Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the LS comes impressively equipped with heated front seats, navigation, a 12-speaker audio system, and of course, its 416-horsepower, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine.
That powerful engine replaces the outgoing V8 mill from past LS models, but drivers won’t miss those two cylinders. The first twin-turbo V6 in Lexus’ history, it delivers waves of power (and 442 lb-ft of torque) while returning 19 mpg city/ 30 highway/ 23 combined in rear-wheel driver iterations, thanks in part to the 10-speed automatic transmission. Add all-wheel drive, and those numbers drop to 18/27/21.
You can certainly option an LS up to a higher price tag. F Sport models like this tester start at $81,000. All-wheel drive adds $3,220. An advanced version of Lexus Safety System+ costs $3,000. The F Sport Performance Package (on our tested car) costs a whopping $9,700. And if you want to upgrade that 12-speaker stereo to the 23-speaker Mark Levinson unit, it’ll cost $1,940 (worth it). Still, amid it all, you’ll be driving home a relative bargain.
