Spanair Flight 5022, an MD-82 was a flight between Barcelona and Gran Canaria with one stopover in Madrid. The accident flight took place on August 20, 2008 with 172 passengers and crew.
The Crash:
The aircraft involved in the crash had been operating for Spanair for 9 years and was previously owned by Korean Air. The flight started its take-off roll at 2:24m down runway 36L. The pilots forgot to deploy the flaps, which didn't give the jet enough lift. Even though a warning had been installed to warn pilots of these situations, it didn't alarm. The aircraft left took-off for a moment before rolling to the right and slamming onto the ground. The tail broke off and the wings and fuselage then broke up into flames while crashing into a riverbed near the airport. 154 people died in the disaster with 18 people surviving.
