The Kanamara Matsuri, also known as the Festival of the Steel Phallus, is an annual Japanese festival held each spring at the Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki. The festival features three phallic portable shrines, which are cheerfully carried and a variety of food and goods to match the festivities. The festival has its origins in an ancient Japanese legend. As the story goes, a vicious demon hid inside the vagina of a young woman after falling in love with her. The festival is celebrated annually on the first Sunday in April.
