Abandoned Oz
A 200 Year Old Piece of Sydney’s History
Sydney Central Station opened in 1906 but before Central Station was built a cemetery stood in its place.
The cemetery was known as the Devonshire Cemetery.
One piece of the old cemetery remains to this day, the original gates!
The gates were lost for a while but were found and moved to Rookwood Cemetery in 2004.
The pillars are made from Sydney Sandstone sourced in around 1818 which makes them approx 200 years old!
Another interesting piece of information about the Devonshire Cemetery is that it was Sydney’s first cemetery.
