"Do babies grow in mommy’s tummy? That cute little euphemism used to placate small children is apparently scientific fact for Idaho state Rep. Vito Barbieri, who believes that the stomach and vagina are connected somehow. Debating a new telemed abortion ban, Rep. Barbieri, a Repbulican who also serves on the board of a crisis pregnancy center, asked the physician testifying if a pregnant person could swallow a small camera in order to have an internal exam.
“Dr. Julie Madsen was testifying in opposition to the bill when Barbieri asked the question. Madsen replied that would be impossible because swallowed pills do not end up in the vagina,” reports the Associated Press. “‘Fascinating. That makes sense,’ Barbieri said, amid the crowd’s laughter.”
Some might find the utter lack of even a basic understanding of anatomy disturbing from a lawmaker intent on making medical decisions for pregnant people as well as overruling the medical best practices of which doctors advocate. In reality, it’s merely par for the course. After all, we’ve already heard you cannot get pregnant from rape, that birth control pills are “baby pesticides,” that an IUD “stops a small child from implanting” in your uterus, and that a womb is littered with the bodies of tiny dead babies if you use hormonal contraception. For anti-choice legislators, grasping actual physiology obviously isn’t a strong point."
