Deoghar Airport is located in Deoghar, in the state of Jharkhand, India. The airport is spread over 654 acres. The airport is being upgraded to handle Airbus A320 type of aircraft. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of development of the airport in Jharkhand on 25 May 2018. The Jharkhand government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in 2013, to develop the airport, to promote religious tourism in the state. The government later signed a tripartite MoU with the AAI and DRDO in March 2017, to develop the airport for non-military use of Airbus A-320 category aircraft. AAI proposed to upgrade the airport at a cost of INR 400 Crore. The upgrade includes extension of existing runway to 2,700 metres, construction of a 5,400 square metre terminal building to handle 200 passengers per hour, a mobile air traffic control, apron for two A320 aircraft, taxiways and an isolation bay. A DVOR/DME navigational facility is also planned. Construction commenced in January 2018.
The assistant project officer of the airport, , said, “With
the successful trial flight conducted by an Indigo Airbus to and from Kolkata at the Deoghar airport, we are now ready to begin regular flight operations. report of Tuesday’s trial flight would be submitted to the DGCA for further review so that flight operations from Deoghar can start as soon as possible, he added. The Deoghar district administration has also been closely monitoring the ongoing construction of the airport’s approach road. The Deoghar airport, the second such facility in the state after Ranchi, is spread over 650 acres of land in Kunda with a 2,500-meter-long runway. It can handle flight operations of A320 type of aircraft. The foundation stone of the Rs 401.34cr airport was laid by Prime Minister in 2018. It is developed by the AAI in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the state government. Once operational, the Deoghar airport will enable an overhaul of the temple town to provide seamless inflow and outflow of scores of tourists who visit here annually, thereby boosting tourism and business potential. CM Hemant Soren on Monday visited Deoghar and reviewed the arrangements being made to operationalise the airport. He said, “The Deoghar airport in all likelihood is set to begin operations before the Shrawani and enable pilgrims from faraway destinations to pay offerings at the Babadham temple.
