Tuscany, Italy | Walking through the Streets of Pisa beside the River Arno
Pisa is a city in Tuscany, central Italy, the capital city of the Province of Pisa. Pisa is known worldwide for its Leaning Tower but the historic city in Tuscany is also home to other well-preserved architectural treasures including historic churches, medieval palaces and bridges across the Arno River and also to the unique Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli).
After crossing Florence, the Arno River crosses Pisa just before it empties into the Ligurian Sea. Walking through the streets of the city that pass beside the river Arno named lungarnos you can admire the panoramic view over the river and the wonderful buildings that go along with the river banks. Lungarnos (the streets along the river banks) have been the heart of the city for few centuries ago and the place where wealthy families had chosen for building their residences. With the romantic bridges and splendid palaces, the lungarnos of Pisa are picturesque and famous places, a characteristic of the former Italian Maritime Republic of Pisa. From the 11th to the 15th century, Pisa was an independent state – The Republic of Pisa, a commercial center whose merchants dominated Mediterranean and Italian trade for a century, until the Republic of Genoa surpassed it.
