Israel Is Building A $55 BILLION Canal Through Gaza to Bypass Egypt's Suez Canal!
In recent times, Israel has been thinking about a really big project that could change how things are shipped around the world: they want to build a new canal that's like a different way to go compared to the famous Suez Canal. This new canal, they call it the Ben Gurion Canal, would connect a place called Gaza-Ashkelon to the Red Sea. It would be really long, stretching for 260 kilometers. Israel wants to do this because they want to be a big deal in shipping things by sea, and they don't want to rely too much on the Suez Canal.
The Ben Gurion Canal, also called the Israeli Canal or Palestinian Canal, is a big idea to build a waterway through Israel. It would be like a new path for ships to go from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, instead of using Egypt's Suez Canal. Right now, many ships, like about 12% of all the trade in the world and 10% of the oil, go through the Suez Canal. But building the Ben Gurion Canal would be a really big job and could cost a lot—somewhere from $16 billion to $55 billion! And it would be super long, like about 182 miles or 293 kilometers. That's almost one-third longer than the Suez Canal we have now.
But if Israel builds its own canal, it could give ships a different way to go, and maybe for cheaper! This could make things tough for Egypt because they might lose money if ships start using Israel's canal instead. But it could also make things better for everyone because if Egypt tries to charge too much money, ships might decide to go through Israel's canal instead, and then Egypt might have to lower its prices to keep them coming. This could end up being good for trade all around the world because if prices go down, more ships might start using both canals, and that would be good for business.
A lot of countries in the area, like ones in the Gulf, East Africa, and Asia, rely on the Suez Canal to get their ships where they need to go. But if Israel builds a canal and charges less money, these countries might start using Israel's canal instead. This could lead to more trade between these countries and Israel, which could be really good for everyone's economy.
But The new canal could be a competition for the Suez Canal, and that could affect Egypt, who makes a lot of money from the Suez Canal. If Israel's canal becomes popular, it might mean that fewer ships use the Suez Canal, and that could make the prices to use it go down. This could help trade all around the world by making it cheaper to move things between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
Even though building the Ben Gurion Canal could help Israel's economy and make trade better, it might also cause some problems in the area. Some people are worried that it could make tensions between countries in the region worse. This is because building the canal could make some countries feel like their power is being challenged. Also, the canal would go through the Gaza-Ashkelon region, where there are already conflicts happening. This could make things even more complicated and might make it harder to build the canal.
The Ben Gurion Canal would be longer than the Suez Canal, which is already really long.
For many years, people have talked about building something different from the Suez Canal. They named this idea after Israel's first prime minister, Ben Gurion. The goal of this new canal is to fix some of the problems we've had with the Suez Canal, like when ships get stuck and block everything. Back in 1963, the US had a super-secret plan to dig the canal using 520 underground nuclear explosions! Can you imagine that? Thankfully, that plan never happened, and it wasn't until 1993 that people found out about it.
The plan for the Ben Gurion Canal is to start at a place called the Gulf of Aqaba, which is close to a city called Eilat on the border between Israel and Jordan. Then, it would go through a valley called the Arabah Valley for about 100 kilometers, between some mountains called the Neve Mountains and the Jordanian Highlands. After that, it would turn westward until it reaches the Dead Sea Basin, and then continue through another valley in the Neve Mountain range. the Gaza Strip and connect to the Mediterranean Sea. This new canal would be a lot like the Suez Canal because it would let ships take a shortcut instead of going all the way around Africa's southern tip and the Cape of Good Hope.
