What if the N95 masks #N95mask are not available to you but you have a surgical masks? An N95 mask can filter at least 95% of airborne particles if you wear it correctly. A surgical mask does not effectively filter small particles from the air and does not prevent leakage around the edge of the mask when the user inhales. If you only have cheap masks, the biggest problem is that they may not fit well and there will be leakage around the edge of the mask. We also proposed a couple of simple tests you can do to compare the effectiveness of different materials you have at home. We propose these minimal testing methods not because they are rigorous but because having an unrealistic sense of security by wearing a mask when it doesn't fit well or being unaware of the level of effectiveness is also dangerous because you might then over-expose yourself to whatever it is you are trying to avoid. Be aware that having a false sense of security is dangerous. So even for a N95 mask, you need to wear it correctly and need to perform fit test.
The coronavirus has three paths: 1. your mouth; 2. your nose; 3. your eyes. In general, if you have ways to guard the three things above, you reduce the probability of infection. Some people asked if a HEPA filter can be used. HEPA is defined as removing at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers. But you need to check three things of your own material:
1. does it filter very small particles?
2. does it prevent droplets from seeping through?
3. does it release any harmful chemical to your lung?
By definition, a HEPA filter passed 1, you just need to check 2 and 3
Some people suggest using disposable diapers. However, there could be undesirable chemicals in the diapers which may not be good for the lungs. Those kinds of chemical are intended to absorb moisture, mask odors, and also may include bleach, Tributyl-tin, Dioxins, fragrances etc.
A lot of people have heard that some medical authorities have made statements that the masks do not work. A mask is a barrier between the sick person's mouth and the healthy person's nose. If the sick person wears a mask, then it works. But if the sick person does not wear a mask, then the healthy person needs a mask. Since there are fewer sick people, it is cheaper to require sick people to wear masks, so it makes more sense to promote sick people wearing masks -- but unfortunately that is hard to monitor or enforce. Healthy people may need to be out among in somewhat crowded areas and do not know who is sick. Wearing masks should be better than no barrier at all. Otherwise, why do medical personnel bother wearing masks?
CDC said: "In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face."
