Driving in Switzerland | Oberalp Pass | Alpine drive | Scenic roads | Uri | Graubünden | Switzerland
Oberalp Pass (el. 2044 m.) is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting the cantons of Graubünden and Uri between Disentis and Andermatt. The pass route measures a length of 32 kilometers and is only accessible during summer. In winter, travelers use the car transport trains of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.
On top of the Oberalp pass road at over 2000 meters above sea level a small lighthouse stands. But why is there a lighthouse on the top of a mountain? And where does it come from?
The lighthouse is from Rotterdam, Holland. It once stood in Hoek van Holland, where the Rhine river eventually flows into the North sea. Later it was moved to the Oberalp pass where it still stands today symbolically at the source of the Rhine river. The original base of the lighthouse however is still kept in the Maritime Museum of Rotterdam
