Sinéad Marie Bernadette O'Connor was born on December 8, 1966, in Glenageary, County Dublin, Ireland. Her childhood was difficult, with her parents' marriage ending in divorce when she was eight. She was sent to a boarding school, which she later claimed was abusive. Music provided an escape, and O'Connor had begun writing songs and performing as a teenager.
Career
O'Connor's music career began in the 1980s. Her 1987 debut album "The Lion and the Cobra" was a critical success. However, she achieved worldwide recognition with her cover of Prince's song "Nothing Compares 2 U," which was released on her second album "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" in 1990. The song and its music video, featuring a close-up of O'Connor's tear-streaked face, had become iconic.
Throughout her career, O'Connor had explored different musical styles and genres, from pop to reggae to traditional Irish music. She released numerous albums, often using her music as a platform for political and social commentary.
Personal Life
O'Connor's personal life had been as public and controversial as her career. She had been married four times and had four children. In 1992, she came out as a lesbian but later identified as being "three-quarters heterosexual, a quarter gay". In 2017, she changed her name to Magda Davitt, and in 2018, she converted to Islam, taking the name Shuhada' Davitt.
Controversies
O'Connor was involved in a number of controversies. Perhaps the most famous was her appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1992, when she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II live on air to protest the Catholic Church's handling of child abuse. The act led to a backlash and significantly impacted her career.
She had been open about her struggles with mental health and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. However, she later stated that this diagnosis was a mistake and that she actually suffered from PTSD due to childhood trauma.
On 26 July 2023, O'Connor's family issued a statement that she had died at the age of 56, without indicating the cause.
