The United Nations Security Council will hold a briefing later today on the deteriorating security situation in the eastern DRC, driven in large part by a re-emergence of the M23 rebel group. The group, thought defeated as far back as 2013, is again responsible for attacks against both the Congolese army and the peacekeeping mission MONUSCO. This prompted the Security Council last week to issue a statement condemning attacks by M23 and all armed groups in the country's east, while calling on authorities to swiftly investigate, and bring the perpetrators to justice. This was the UN Secretary General's Spokesperson on Friday.
