(8 Apr 2017) Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, said on Saturday the detention centre housing asylum seekers on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island should be closed by the end of the year.
Speaking in Port Moresby after talks with Papua New Guinea (PNG)'s Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, he thanked the government for its co-operation to stop people smuggling.
According to Australian government statistics, over 850 asylum seekers are awaiting resettlement on Manus.
The Australian government is currently in negotiations with the United States to finalise a deal which would see some of them resettled in the US.
The PNG Supreme Court ruled that the Manus Island detention centre was unconstitutional in April 2016, and ordered it to be closed.
O'Neill will host the 2018 APEC summit in Papua New Guinea, acknowledging Australia's support in providing security.
